Bethungra Dam, NSW

Bethungra Dam at sunset
Since the sun has finally decided to shine, it seems like a good time to mention Bethungra Dam. Bethungra Dam is located just out of the tiny town of Bethungra in south western New South Wales. The dam isn't huge (it covers around 14 hectares) but there is plenty of space to paddle a kayak or tinny and plenty of fish(mainly redfin) hovering under the water.

There are some craggy hills to one side of the dam which provide a short walk which isn't too challenging and there are plenty of rocky features for any budding photographers looking for a showy subject. When the sun sets, they glow red and with just a little imagination you can imagine you are up in the Scottish Highlands...

The dam has camping facilities, toilet facilities, BBQ areas but does get busy during school holidays and on warm weekends. That said, the majority of times I have been there (especially in winter) I have had it all to myself.

Bethungra Dam can be accessed via Waterworks Road in Bethungra. This is a dirt road but its in fairly good condition so should be OK for most cars. Bethungra is about 20 minutes from Cootamundra.

The Bredbo Christmas Barn

Brebo Christmas Barn
Christmas lovers beware! If you visit the Bredbo Christmas Barn, you are going to spend a lot of time and money...but it will be worth it! The Bredbo Christmas Barn is one of the most amazing places - it is jam packed from floor to ceiling with all things Christmas and walking through the doors is like walking into a place where there is just a little sprinkle of magic in the air. There are themed trees, decorations of EVERY kind you can imagine, statues, candles, lights, wreaths...whatever you want, if it has anything to do with Christmas, you will find it here. It didn't matter how many photos I took, absolutely none of them did the place justice. To understand how wonderfully nuts this place is, you really need to visit.

Bredbo is a tiny dot of a town which straddles the Monaro Highway about 45 minutes south of Canberra or 20 minutes north of Cooma. If you like Christmas, this is a must do...and if you are a grinch who hates Christmas, visit the Bredbo Christmas Barn and you just might change your mind!

The Bredbo Christmas Barn is open June - December each year.
